How to test your webcam

  1. Press Start webcam test and choose Allow when your browser asks to use the camera.
  2. You should see yourself in the preview. The status confirms the camera is working.
  3. If you have several cameras (built-in and USB, or front and back on a phone), switch between them with the Camera list.
  4. Check the readings below the picture, and press Save a snapshot if you want a still photo. It downloads straight to your device.

What the numbers mean

The preview is mirrored by default, as most video-call apps show you to yourself like a mirror. Untick Mirror image to see what others see.

Private by design

The camera picture never leaves your device. It is shown in your browser only, snapshots are saved locally, and the camera switches off when you press Stop or close the page.

Questions and answers

How can I check if my webcam is working?

Press Start webcam test and allow camera access. If you can see yourself, the camera works. The resolution and frame rate readings tell you how well.

Why is my webcam picture dark or jerky?

Low light makes many webcams lower their frame rate and add grain. Add light in front of you, such as a lamp or a white screen on a second display.

Why is the resolution lower than my camera's specification?

Some cameras only reach their top resolution in certain modes, over USB 3, or in their own app. Browsers also receive what the camera driver offers.

Is my video recorded or uploaded?

No. The picture is only shown in your browser. Snapshots download straight to your device, and nothing is sent to us.

Why is my image back to front?

The preview is mirrored, like a mirror. Untick Mirror image to see the picture as others will see it.
