Uses for a blue screen

Not looking for this? If your computer is showing a blue error screen with a sad face or error message, that is a system crash, often called the "blue screen of death". This page cannot fix that. Note the stop code shown, restart your computer, and search for that code on your system maker's support site.

How to use it

Press Start blue screen or click the preview. Dim it with the slider, or the arrow keys during full screen. For chroma keying, choose a mid blue rather than the brightest blue, light it evenly and avoid reflections on the glass. Press Esc or double-click to exit.

Bright blue light late at night can make it harder to fall asleep. For a bedtime light, try the orange or red screen instead.

Blue screen for photography and atmosphere

Blue light works well for night-time looks in photos and video: a blue screen behind or beside a subject gives the impression of moonlight or a city at night. Combine it with a warm light from the other side for the popular "teal and orange" film look. For chroma keying on a small scale, such as shooting a toy, a model or a product, a large TV or monitor showing even blue can replace a backdrop cloth. Keep the subject a little away from the screen, light it separately and avoid shiny objects that will reflect the blue. For a gentle mood light, choose a deep, darker blue at low brightness so the room glows rather than glares.

Questions and answers

Is this the Windows blue screen of death?

No. This page just shows the colour blue. A blue error screen on Windows is a crash; restart and look up the stop code it shows.

Should I use blue or green for chroma key?

Green is usually easier to key with modern cameras. Use blue when your subject is wearing green or has green in it.

How do I check for dead blue pixels?

Show the blue screen at full brightness and look closely. A black dot is a pixel whose blue part isn't lighting up.

How do I exit?

Press Esc or double-click (double-tap on touch screens).
