Cookies and local storage
Last updated: 19 October 2026
The short version
- We don't use cookies of our own. The site has no logins and no analytics.
- Your browser's local storage remembers your language, keyboard layout and best scores. It never leaves your device.
- Google's ads and consent message use cookies. In the UK, the EU and Switzerland, advertising cookies are only used if you agree.
- Change your choice at any time with Privacy and cookie settings at the bottom of every page.
What are cookies and local storage?
Cookies are small text files a website asks your browser to keep. They can be read again on later visits, sometimes by other companies. Local storage is a similar space in your browser where a website can save small notes for itself. Unlike cookies, local storage is not sent to the website's server. Session storage is the same, but it is cleared when you close the tab.
What DeviceCheck stores on your device
These are set by DeviceCheck's own code. They stay in your browser and are never sent to us.
| Name | What it does | How long | Needs consent? |
|---|---|---|---|
dc-lang | Remembers the language you picked in the language menu or the language banner. Once it is set, the site stops switching or offering languages automatically. | Until you clear it | No (remembers your choice) |
dc-lang-no | Remembers that you said "No thanks" to a page in your language, so we don't ask again. | Until you clear it | No (remembers your choice) |
dc-auto (session storage) | A short note made when the home page switches to your language, so the "shown in your language" notice appears once. | Deleted straight away, or when you close the tab | No (needed for the feature) |
dc-kb-layout-… | The keyboard layout you picked in the keyboard tester (one for each language version of the site). | Until you clear it | No (remembers your choice) |
dc-cps-best-… | Your best score in each mode of the click speed test. | Until you clear it | No (a feature you use) |
dc-space-best-… | Your best score in each mode of the spacebar clicker. | Until you clear it | No (a feature you use) |
dc-react-best | Your best average in the reaction time test. | Until you clear it | No (a feature you use) |
Cookies used by Google
These are set by Google (on our domain or on Google's own domains such as doubleclick.net) for the adverts and the consent message. The exact names can change. Google publishes the full list of cookies its advertising uses and explains how Google uses cookies.
| Name | What it does | How long | Needs consent? |
|---|---|---|---|
FCCDCF, FCNEC | Store the choices you make in the consent message, so it doesn't appear on every page. | Up to 13 months | No (stores your consent choice) |
__gads, __gpi | Help Google AdSense show ads, limit how often you see the same ad, and measure ads. | Up to 13 months | Yes, in the UK, EEA and Switzerland |
__eoi | Helps Google protect ads against fraud and abuse. | Up to 6 months | Yes, in the UK, EEA and Switzerland |
IDE, DSID, test_cookie (doubleclick.net) | Used by Google to show personalised ads based on your visits to this and other sites, and to check whether your browser accepts cookies. | From a few minutes up to 13 months | Yes, in the UK, EEA and Switzerland |
No other cookies
We don't use analytics, social media buttons or tracking pixels. The site has no accounts, so there are no login or session cookies. Our web server doesn't set any cookies.
How to change your choices or clear storage
- Change your ad choices: use the Privacy and cookie settings link at the bottom of any page. In the UK, the EEA and Switzerland this opens the consent message again. If the link brings you here instead, the consent message isn't running for your region or is blocked in your browser.
- Turn off personalised ads from Google everywhere: visit Google's Ads Settings, or www.aboutads.info for some other ad companies.
- Clear cookies and local storage: in most browsers, open Settings, then Privacy (look for "Cookies and site data" or "Clear browsing data"), and delete the data for devicecheck.online. This removes your saved language, keyboard layout and best scores too.
- Block cookies: your browser can block cookies for all sites, or only third-party cookies. Every test still works if you do.
The rules
In the UK, cookies and local storage are covered by the Privacy and Electronic Communications Regulations (PECR), as amended by the Data (Use and Access) Act 2025. In the EU, similar rules come from the ePrivacy Directive. Under these rules, storage that is strictly necessary, or that only remembers your own choices, doesn't need consent. Advertising cookies do. Read our privacy policy for more about how data is used.
